Pakistan Floods 2011

Further to yesterday’s update 10 – the following was received today from a member of Pathfinders Welfare Organisation in response to President Dr Farhana Hussain’s message thanking Past President Irfan Iqbal for the supply of Water-Survival Boxes being distributed by Rotary District 3271 in Pakistan.

In an exercise as massive as this, even decent-sized contributions appear to be a drop in the ocean, but they count. Everything counts. PWO is waiting for some more contributions from other kind donors so that essential medications, dry food and other critical items for children, can also be taken to Badin and other affected areas, together with the Rotary donation. Availability of clean water continues to be a challenge and the logistic roadblocks are also to be dealt with, I guess.

I thank you for your support and encourage you, your friends and other Rotarians to continue your generosity. The magic lies in consistency. Your gift to Pathfinders allows them to help the many flood affected families, thousands still in very trying circumstances, until they find their way back to their homes. We estimate the need to last at least the end of the year. I could not help noticing the caption on Dawn's home page which reads Flood Relief - Too Slow, Too Little which perhaps says it all.

ROTARY WATER-SURVIVAL BOX UPDATE 10 - October 2011-
PAKISTAN - SINDH PROVINCE FLOODS

Further to ‘Update 9’ I am pleased to be able to confirm that the second consignment of 300 standard Water-Survival Boxes requested by Humanity First UK was delivered to their London depot last week for essential foodstuffs and powdered milk to be added prior to despatch to families left homeless and without access to clean water by the floods in Sindh Province. This brings the total to 800 standard WSBs sent to Pakistan in the past month.
This week 300 WSBs in multi-pack format arrived in Nairobi, Kenya on Friday morning, having been collected from our Somerset warehouse on Wednesday. They had been requested by the Kenyan branch of Humanity First who will now combine with Save the Children in Nairobi to provide a means of purifying water along the 100 km route taken by refugees fleeing across the border from Somalia en route to the refugee camps at Dadaab.
These three consignments have reduced our stock down to just 200 standard boxes. Volunteer groups of Rotarians and members of Inner Wheel have been organised to continue the packing process and with existing resources will replace some 200 boxes in the next month.
A number of Clubs have already responded to previous updates – for which many thanks. However, we urgently need further donations to enable us to build up significant stocks again. To highlight the situation - during the Rotary Year to date (i.e. 1 July to 22 October) donations received total £32,719 as compared to £211,734 in the same period of 2010.
If you wish to respond to the current emergencies in Pakistan and Kenya we would be pleased to convert donations into more Water-Survival Boxes – see www.worldwaterworks.org for details. Cheques made out to ‘Worldwaterworks Limited’ should be sent either to our registered office or to me at Rotary, The White House, Pensford, Bristol BS39 4NE. Donations intended for Pakistan or Kenya will be used for that purpose for as long as the need continues – thereafter they will be used to replenish stock for the next disaster.

ROTARY WATER-SURVIVAL BOX UPDATE 9 - October 2011-
PAKISTAN - SINDH PROVINCE FLOODS

I
am pleased to be able to confirm that the 500 standard Water-Survival Boxes requested by District Governor 3271 Iqbal Qureshi are now being distributed by Rotarians in Pakistan under the direction of Past President Irfan. His latest message (8 October) is as follows:

I wish to inform you that the first consignment of Water Survival Boxes has been dispatched to District Badin (Sindh) which will be delivered today. It may be mentioned here that District Badin is one of the worst affected areas and is a constituency of honourable Speaker of Pakistan's National Assembly. In order to ensure transparency in distribution, Water Survival Boxes will be distributed amongst affected people by officials of District Administration. I will send you photographs and other details of distribution shortly.

The second consignment of 500 Water-Survival Boxes will be handled by Humanity First UK and will be accompanied by supplies of vital foods for distribution by Humanity First’s resident team in Pakistan. Through the good offices of Humanity First arrangements are now being made with Save the Children in London and their Country Director of Logistics in Kenya for 300 boxes in multi-pack format to be sent to Nairobi to provide a means of purifying water along the 100 km route taken by refugees fleeing across the border from Somalia en route to the refugee camps at Dadaab. These consignments will consume all existing stocks. Volunteer groups of Rotarians and members of Inner Wheel have been organised to continue the packing process with existing resources and may replace some 200 boxes in the next month.

A number of Clubs have already responded to previous updates – for which many thanks. However, we urgently need further donations to enable us to build up significant stocks again. ROTARY WATER-SURVIVAL BOX UPDATE 8 - September 2011-
PAKISTAN - SINDH PROVINCE FLOODS

I am pleased to be able to confirm that the 500 standard Water-Survival Boxes requested by District Governor 3271 Iqbal Qureshi were collected from our depot in Somerset on Wednesday afternoon last week. The consignment comprising 25 pallets each containing 20 boxes was split into two parts and both had been delivered to Karachi International Airport by 0515 this morning local time. DG Iqbal has confirmed that customs clearance has been obtained and arrangements are in hand to have them transported to the ‘Interior of Sindh Province’ for distribution to families most affected by the severe monsoon floods. The latest advice is that the situation in Sindh Province remains extremely grave and we are currently working on sending a second consignment of 500 standard boxes as soon as possible. When the second consignment leaves we will have no more standard WSBs available for this or other emergencies.

Humanity First UK have today advised of a new requirement for clean drinking water in Kenya along the route taken by refugees fleeing across the border from Somalia and en route to the refugee camps at Dadaab – some 100 km distant. We have offered the 300 boxes in multi-pack format (water purification kits only) that are currently available - for distribution by Humanity First’s permanent team resident in Nairobi and await confirmation.

Once we have covered the cost of air freight charges remaining funds will only provide for our fixed costs (rent of our warehouse space etc) and a limited amount of stock reordering. We urgently need further donations to enable us to build up stocks again.

You will recall we were able to send a total of some 1,340 WSBs to Pakistan in 2010 largely due to the tremendous funding support we received from Rotary Clubs across virtually all Districts in RIBI. If your District or Club wishes to respond to the current emergency in Pakistan we would be pleased to convert donations into more Water-Survival Boxes – see www.worldwaterworks.org for details. Cheques made out to ‘Worldwaterworks Limited’ should be sent either to our registered office or to me at Rotary, The White House, Pensford, Bristol BS39 4NE. Donations intended for Pakistan will be used for that purpose for as long as the need continues – thereafter they will be used to replenish stock for the next disaster.

During the past few days we have been alerted to the developing disaster caused by extreme monsoon rains in the Sindh province of Pakistan. The disaster is estimated to be on a larger scale than the 2010 monsoon floods and already some 1.3 million homes have been damaged and more than 7 million people are directly affected. Families have again lost their homes and possessions, and do not have access to clean water. You will have seen the distressing scenes on the national TV news programmes.

On 15 September contact was made with DG 3271 Iqbal Qureshi – his district includes Sindh province – advising him of the availability of Water-Survival Boxes. By return he requested we send supplies and provided details of his appointed co-ordinator to handle incoming aid for distribution by Rotarians in the affected areas. Since then we have confirmed essential arrangements for reception and distribution in Pakistan and are currently finalising air cargo transport to Karachi where DG Qureshi will ensure rapid transit through customs. A total of 500 standard Water-Survival Boxes are scheduled to leave our depot in Somerset mid-week. We have also offered boxes to our partner aid agency, Humanity First UK, through their Vice Chairman who is liaising with the permanent HF unit in Islamabad.

Rotarians from Chelwood Bridge supported by volunteers from Rotary and Inner Wheel Clubs in the South West of England continue to convert donations into packed boxes ready for the next emergency. Donations to help us build up our stock levels would be very welcome and should be made out to ‘Worldwaterworks Limited’ and sent to Rotary, c/o The White House, Pensford, Bristol BS39 4NE or to our registered office.
